HOT OFF THE PRESS! Ballarat's new heritage plan 'Our People, Culture & Place' released for public comment.

A plan of action to sustain Ballarat’s much-loved heritage

The City of Ballarat has released Our People, Culture and Place: a plan to sustain Ballarat’s heritage 2017-2030 for public comment. Feedback on the plan is due by Monday 20 November 2017.

The plan sets outlines for the City of Ballarat and Ballarat community to work towards to achieve the best outcomes for the region’s heritage as the city grows and develops over the next decade.

It also helps deliver the vision set in Today Tomorrow Together: The Ballarat Strategy (2015) which highlighted how important safeguarding Ballarat’s heritage was to the community.

The heritage plan brings together findings from extensive stakeholder consultation and background studies.

The plan also responds to the many suggestions from the Ballarat community following consultation on the preliminary heritage plan, which was released in 2016.

The Our People, Culture and Place: a plan to sustain Ballarat’s heritage 2017-2030 plan outlines three key areas:

  1. Regeneration
  2. Celebrating and inspiring with Ballarat’s stories
  3. Managing change and safeguarding heritage

The plan implements the Historical Urban Landscape (HUL) approach, which the City of Ballarat began applying in 2013.

The City of Ballarat was the first local government in the world to sign up to, and implement, the HUL program, which is an initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The HUL approach brings together social and economic development goals with conservation, an approach which features heavily in the Our People, Culture and Place: a plan to sustain Ballarat’s heritage 2017-2030 plan.
