The Chinese on the Goldfields

In the 1850s tens of thousands of Chinese people flocked to Victoria, joining people from around the world who came here chasing the lure of gold. Fleeing violence, famine and poverty in their homeland they sought fortune for their families in the place they called ‘New Gold Mountain’. Facing discrimination and injustice they carved out lives in this strange new land.

Behind the scenes with Wadawurrung - Walking with Waa (White Night Ballarat 2017)

White Night Ballarat

Take a look at Wadawurring Walking with Waa – a piece made up of 70 paintings by Aunty Marlene and her daughter, Deanne, being turned into a spectacle of projections at White Night Ballarat in 2017. Son Barry will accompany the work by singing in the traditional Wadawurrung language.

Making history at the BMI

A commissioned work by the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute on the occasion of celebrations around the completion of restoration of this beautiful space built in 1859. Full of ideas, stories and fabulous folk the BMI is Ballarat's independent cultural hub, running since 1859.

Seeing the land from an Aboriginal canoe (Award winning!)

Explores the little known contribution Aboriginal people made in colonial times by guiding people and stock across the river systems of Victoria.  The film highlights values held by Aboriginal people: sharing, heroic and an entrepreneurial spirit. These values remain a part of Australia's identity to this day.

This video was awarded Highly Commended at the National/Australasian MAGNA 2016 Awards ceremony on the 18th May in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Last Goodbye

In 1914 Australia went to war. Thousands of young recruits passed through Ballarat on their way to the front, to prepare for battle and to say a last goodbye.

This documentary film explores the meaning of remembrance and looks at the way the Great War changed us, through the eyes of young people of Ballarat today.

The film was launched on Sunday the 8th November at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka.
The Memories of War Film and Research Project was a collaboration between the Ballarat RSL, Federation University Australia, the Ballarat Gold Museum, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka and Wind & Sky Productions. It was funded by the Australian Government Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program and the Victorian Government Anzac Centenary Major Grants Program.

Restoring St Nicholas

Restoring St Nicholas is a short film about the restoration of a Greek Orthodox Church in Ballarat. In 2009 the Greek Orthodox community of St Nicholas approached the City of Ballarat, Heritage Victoria and the trade school at the University of Ballarat to form a unique partnership to restore the church. This project allowed young apprentices to learn traditional trade skills and practice the technique of mixing and using lime mortar. This film documents the project and was developed for Culture Victoria, which showcases stories from cultural agencies and collecting organisations around the state.
